The German government believes that acknowledging and accepting Israel’s right to exist is a part of German identity and non-negotiable. As such, new citizens are expected to share this viewpoint. This stance comes as part of Germany’s general acknowledgement of its historical responsibility for the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were murdered by the Nazi regime during World War II. Accepting Israel’s right to exist is therefore seen as part of combating anti-Semitism. While this might not be a formal requirement for citizenship, it is certainly a strong expectation for integration into German society.
