The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against property management software company, RealPage Inc., accusing it of fostering illegal collusion among landlords and other property owners to keep rental prices high. The lawsuit claims that RealPage’s revenue management software, used widely in rental real estate, specifically its “Rent Match” tool, enabled property owners to share sensitive information about rent rates, occupancy rates, concessions, and future pricing plans. This essentially allowed them to coordinate pricing in ways that violate federal antitrust laws, leading to artificially inflated rental prices. The DOJ is seeking to stop these practices and undo the harm caused to renters by this alleged collusion. RealPage has yet to comment on the lawsuit.
