Iranian President-elect Ebrahim Raisi has expressed his readiness to boost relations with Europe in a bid to set it on ‘the right path’. During a press conference, he highlighted that he was willing to work with the European Union (EU) and other major powers to implement policies that would serve mutual interests. However, he added that it would be on the condition of mutual respect and refraining from interfering in Iran’s internal affairs.
Raisi’s comments come amid calls for the EU and its allies to reassess their policies towards Iran. However, how the new president will navigate the complicated issues, such as attempts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, remains unclear. Raisi assured that his foreign policy focus would be on improving ties with neighboring countries and engaging with the world ‘positively’.
