The Hershey Company, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, and Friendly’s Ice Cream announced voluntary recalls for their products over concerns of potential Listeria contamination. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
If you’ve purchased any of these products recently, it is advised you do not consume them and instead throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. For more detailed information about the recall, including specific product descriptions and ‘use by’ dates, contact the respective company or visit the FDA Recall website.
Remember to always practice good food safety habits, including washing your hands and ensuring your food is cooked to the right temperature to prevent illness.
